How to Set Up Your E-Bike After Delivery: Step-by-Step Assembly Guide

Most electric bikes arrive 85% pre-assembled — the main tasks are attaching the front wheel, stem, handlebars, display, and pedals. With the right preparation, you can have your new e-bike ready to ride in 20 to 45 minutes. This guide covers universal setup steps that apply to most e-bike brands, with specific tips and resources for FavoriteBikes owners throughout.

FavoriteBikes owners: Download your model's manual and watch the assembly video on our E-Bike Manuals & Videos page before you begin.

What You'll Need

Most tools come included in the box. Before you start, lay them out:

  • Hex key / Allen wrench set (typically 4mm, 5mm)

  • 15mm open-end wrench (for pedals and front wheel)

  • 2mm Allen wrench (for display mounting)

  • Floor pump with pressure gauge

  • A second person — e-bikes are heavy, and some steps are easier with two sets of hands

Step 1: Unbox Carefully

Open the box from the top and remove foam layers one at a time. Do not use a box cutter near the frame — a slip can scratch the paint or damage wiring.

Check the box for all included accessories:

  • Charger and charging cable

  • Battery key (×2 on most models)

  • Tool kit (hex wrenches, pedal wrench)

  • User manual and warranty card

  • Reflectors, RFID fob, or other accessories (varies by model)

Tip: Keep all original packaging for at least 30 days in case you need to file a shipping damage claim.

Step 2: Install the Stem

The stem connects the fork steerer tube to your handlebars. On most bikes it ships partially loosened for transport.

  • Align the stem with the front wheel so they point in the same direction

  • Install and hand-tighten the top cap bolt to pre-load the headset bearings

  • Tighten the stem clamp bolts in a crisscross pattern for even clamping force

  • Do not overtighten the top cap bolt — this can bind the headset and affect steering

Step 3: Install and Align the Handlebars

Center the handlebar on the stem's front clamp ring and tighten the four bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern. This ensures equal clamping pressure and prevents the bars from twisting.

Adjust handlebar angle to a comfortable riding position — grips slightly upward for flat bars. Set your brake lever angle so your wrists are neutral when gripping. A common starting point is levers angled downward at 45 degrees. Tighten the clamp bolt once satisfied.

Test: Grip the bars firmly and try to twist them — they should not move once properly tightened.

Step 4: Install the Front Wheel

Most e-bikes ship with the front wheel removed to save space. This step requires care — brake alignment is critical.

  • Position the bike stably on a stand, or rest it upside-down on the handlebars and saddle

  • Insert the wheel axle into the fork dropouts, making sure the wheel is centered

  • Align the brake rotor with the brake caliper — the rotor should slot cleanly between the brake pads without touching them

  • Hand-tighten the axle nuts on both sides, then tighten evenly with a 15mm wrench (25–30 Nm)

  • Spin the wheel — it should rotate freely without rubbing against the brake pads

Do not overtighten the axle nuts — this can damage the wheel bearings.

Step 5: Align the Front Wheel

Once the wheel is installed, confirm alignment before fully locking down:

  • Stand over the bike and look straight down — the wheel, stem, and handlebars should form a straight line

  • Hold the front wheel between your legs and rotate the handlebars until everything is aligned

  • Tighten the top cap bolt to pre-load the headset, then tighten the stem clamp bolts evenly

Step 6: Install the Pedals

Pedals are the most commonly reversed step in e-bike assembly. Getting this wrong means the pedal will unscrew itself while riding — a serious safety issue.

  • Right pedal (R): Drive side — threads clockwise (standard)

  • Left pedal (L): Non-drive side — threads counterclockwise (reverse thread)

Apply a small amount of grease to the threads before installing. Thread each pedal by hand first — if it feels unusually hard to start, stop and re-check the direction. Once hand-tight, use a 15mm wrench to fully tighten (35 Nm). Cross-threading a pedal is expensive to fix, so take it slow.

Step 7: Install the Display

Most modern e-bikes have a separate display unit that needs to be mounted and connected during assembly.

  • Insert the display into its mounting position (on the stem or handlebar, depending on model)

  • Secure with the included screw — hand-tight only

  • Connect all electrical connectors — they are shaped to fit only the correct port

  • Route cables neatly to avoid pinching or snagging while riding

FavoriteBikes owners: The Favorite display inserts into the top of the stem and connects via three connectors. See our Assembly Manual for exact connector locations.

Step 8: Set the Seat Height

Correct seat height improves comfort, efficiency, and reduces knee strain. Use this method:

  • Sit on the saddle and place your heel on the pedal at its lowest position — your leg should be fully extended

  • When you shift to the ball of your foot, you should have a slight bend in the knee — that's the ideal riding position

  • Never raise the seat post above the MAX HEIGHT mark printed on the post — this weakens the post and can cause sudden collapse

Step 9: Inflate the Tires

E-bikes are heavier than regular bikes, so correct tire pressure matters more. Check your tire sidewall for the recommended PSI range — it's printed directly on the tire.

  • Fat tires (3"–5"): typically 5–20 PSI

  • Standard/hybrid tires (1.9"–2.4"): typically 30–65 PSI

Use a floor pump with a gauge. Most e-bike tires use a Schrader valve (same as a car tire). Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance; over-inflated tires reduce grip and increase puncture risk. FavoriteBikes Hybrid models: recommended pressure is 30–40 PSI.

Step 10: Charge the Battery

Your battery may arrive partially charged — this is normal. You can ride right away, but if you're planning a longer first trip, charging to full first gives you the most range.

  • Plug the charger into the wall first, then connect to the bike's charging port

  • Charging indicator: typically red = charging, green = full

  • A full charge takes approximately 4–6 hours depending on your model

Cold weather note: Lithium-ion batteries should never be charged below 0°C (32°F). If your bike has been stored in a cold garage, bring it indoors to room temperature before charging. Learn more: Cold-Weather E-Bike Charging Rules →

Step 11: Power On and Test All Functions

Run a quick function check before your first ride:

  • Press the power button — the display should light up and show battery level

  • Cycle through pedal assist levels (usually 0–5) to confirm they respond

  • Apply the throttle gently (rear wheel slightly lifted) to confirm it engages smoothly

  • Squeeze both brakes — each should engage before the lever reaches the handlebar

  • Test front and rear lights

FavoriteBikes owners: Some Favorite models require an RFID fob to activate — tap the fob on the display logo after pressing the power button. If your bike doesn't power on, check your accessory box for the fob. For a full walkthrough of all controls, watch our Operation Video on YouTube →

Step 12: Register Your Warranty

Don't skip this step — warranty registration makes future support faster and protects your coverage.

Common Setup Mistakes to Avoid

  • Left pedal threaded clockwise — it will unscrew during riding

  • Seat post above the MAX line — weakens the post and can cause sudden collapse

  • Front wheel brake rotor not aligned — causes rubbing and reduces braking performance

  • Skipping the brake test — always check before riding, even if the bike looks fully assembled

  • Charging a cold battery — bring the bike to room temperature first

  • Forgetting the RFID fob — some models won't power on without it
